Which short drama app is best?

There is no single best one; it depends on what you want from the app. Going by the numbers in our catalog of 19,432 series, here is how it breaks down.

• Best chance of finishing a show for free: ReelShort. 276 of its 4,676 series (about 6%) are free from the first episode to the last. On NetShort and GoodShort the count is 7 and 6, and DramaBox and ShortMax have none.
• Biggest catalog: NetShort. It lists 9,410 series, about twice ReelShort's 4,676.
• Longest free start: ShortMax. Its median series gives you 10 free episodes. The other four apps sit at 9, so the gap is one episode, no more.
• Latest paywall on a typical series: GoodShort. The lock most often falls at episode 12, against episode 11 on the other four. Its spread is wide, though: 48% of GoodShort series are locked by episode 8.

Genres point the same way. Going by our catalog, NetShort leads in revenge, romance and fantasy, ReelShort in billionaire, family and thriller stories, and GoodShort in mafia, werewolf and LGBTQ+ titles. If you are new to the format, start with what vertical dramas are.

The free start is nearly identical everywhere, so the choice usually comes down to catalog and to which show you want to watch.

ReelShort: best for finishing a show without paying

ReelShort is the second-biggest app we track, with 4,676 series and a median of 60 episodes per show. A typical series gives you 9 free episodes and locks at episode 11.

Its real edge is the free shelf. The 276 fully free series are more than every other app combined, so completely free dramas is mostly a ReelShort list. It also leads our catalog in billionaire, family and thriller stories, and in the hidden-identity, strong-female-lead and misunderstanding tropes.

DramaBox: best for forbidden-love stories

DramaBox has 3,052 series, a median of 50 episodes and a median of 9 free ones. Like ShortMax, it has no fully free shows in our data: not one of its series can be watched to the end without coins, rewards or a membership.

It also locks early more often than most. 47% of its series are locked by episode 8, a higher share than on ReelShort, NetShort or ShortMax. In exchange it leads our catalog in the forbidden-love, girls'-love and mermaid tropes.

Coins can be earned from check-ins and ads inside the app, and a membership opens the catalog. On DramaBox's mobile website, the unlock prompt for one episode read "Unlock this episode for 50 Coins", and the membership line carried small print in dollars: $4.99 a week for the first two weeks, then $7.99 a week. GoodShort: best for mafia romance and a later paywall

GoodShort lists 2,950 series with a median of 58 episodes. The typical paywall is at episode 12, one later than elsewhere, and about one series in five gives you 11 or more free episodes. Many series show the free part as "11+", which we count as 11, so a few may give slightly more.

The other side of that is a harsh minority: 48% of series are locked by episode 8, the highest share of the five. Pick the show before you pick the app.

In our catalog GoodShort leads in mafia, werewolf and LGBTQ+ stories, and in the chasing-love, betrayal and system and level-up tropes. It also publishes coin pack prices more openly than the rest. NetShort: best for the biggest catalog

NetShort is the largest app in our data: 9,410 series, 8,663 of them found nowhere else. The median show has 50 episodes, 9 of them free, and the lock most often lands on episode 11.

It leads in revenge, romance and fantasy, and in the karma-payback, underdog-rise and rebirth tropes. A few things to know. Only 7 series are fully free. Our free-episode numbers come from netshort.com, and on its website a handful of series are open except for the final episode, as of October 23, 2026. The app may lock more, so trust the unlock prompt in the app.

ShortMax: best for a small catalog of exclusives

ShortMax is the smallest of the five, with 834 series, but it has the longest typical free start: a median of 10 free episodes and a median show length of 61. The lock most often falls at episode 11.

Of its 834 series, 794 are not listed on any other app we track. If a ShortMax show locks, there is rarely a second app to try it on. None of its series is fully free, and some titles stretch to 20 free episodes.

Which app has the most free episodes?

None of the five wins on the median: four sit at 9 free episodes and ShortMax at 10. The difference shows up at the edges. ReelShort has the fully free shows, and the most generous single titles run well past 20 free episodes on several apps.

How paying works on these apps

All five follow one pattern: a free start, then coins for single episodes or a subscription for everything. Coin prices are not published as a rate on most of them, and they change by region and over time.

The counts come from our own catalog of 19,432 series, taken on October 23, 2026: NetShort 9,410, ReelShort 4,676, DramaBox 3,052, GoodShort 2,950 and ShortMax 834. A series on two apps is counted for both, so the app totals add up to more than 19,432.

Free-episode numbers are what each app shows for a series, read from the app or its web listing. Medians and shares are calculated per app over all its series with episode data, which is every one of them. For NetShort the figures come from netshort.com, and the app may lock more. Prices come from official store pages, dated above.

Are short drama apps free? Partly. All five are free to install and let you watch the opening episodes, then ask for coins or a subscription. Very few series are free to the end, and nearly all of those are on ReelShort.

Which short drama app is the cheapest? We cannot tell you. Prices differ by country and change over time, and only GoodShort publishes a coin rate. Compare the unlock prompt in each app for the show you want.
